Between Ash and Charcoal
“Between Ash and Charcoal” is a work that materializes a philosophical structure encompassing natural flow, the gravity of matter, resonance between materials, and even the viewer’s gaze. I placed a mirrored film at the center of the canvas and poured mixtures of ash + latex and charcoal + latex—without using a brush—entrusting them to the pull of gravity. These lines intersect and flow across the surface, and their traces fill the canvas.
Here, I attempted a material union of the two concepts: trace and flow, with the viewer’s reflected gaze layered on top. The audience sees the traces while simultaneously confronting their own image within them. Thus, the work expands from a mere sculptural object into a field of relational thought.
This piece is the result of surrendering art to the properties of matter, the action of time, and the natural law of gravity. I refrained from controlling the process as much as possible and do not attempt to explain the outcome. What remains are the intersections of flow, the entanglement of traces, and the gaze that discovers the self in between.
